Fire Prevention
Fire Prevention Program was presented by members of the Fort Blackmore Fire Department in September of 2013. Care was used to present the fire service as professional and caring. The Instructor discussed smoke detectors and played a game with all the students about crawling through smoke. A fully turned-out firefighter walked throughout the students assembled and shook hands to decrease the natural fear of firefighters in all their gear. A crawl through of the trucks was also handled with care. A final picture was taken of the fire crew and all the students in front of Truck 703 and Tanker 706.

Devil's Fork Search and Rescue 23-24SEP2012
Fort Blackmore Fire Dept. and Duffield Fire & Rescue participated in Search and Rescue operations in the Devil's Fork Area of north-western Scott Co, VA. Members from both departments conducted command center and ground search for 3 missing teen-agers. On the 23rd and 24th of September, 2012, members participated with Scott County Sheriff's Department and Virginia State Police to locate the subjects in the Three Forks region of the National Forest. Med Flight 2 was employed twice to help pinpoint the location of the missing. A Total of 7 teams were deployed, with the final two teams in search mode, on foot and ATV, at approximately 0200 on Monday morning. The missing teenagers returned to command staging at exactly 0700. Incident Commmand secured at that time. Fort Blackmore Fire wishes to thank all those who participated.

First Responder Goes by the Way-Side
Fort Blackmore Fire Department had a first responder vehicle and EMT's to man the fire deparment. When our EMS ticket ran out, we had no OMD. Our OMD did not have his VA EMS OMD certificate. Therefore, we were waiting for the Doctor to recertify. During that interlude, we got another OMD to sign for us, but our time period had run out. Therefore, VA EMS for South Western Virginia decided to drop us from our certificate. Also, manpower became slim and far between. Our heart was there, but the timing was all bad.

New Pumper Expected
Our new 1st due pumper, 703, is expected to be ready from 4-Guys Fire Trucks, in PA, around the 16th of August, 2011. It has an International chassis, and equipment box made by 4-Guys. Department members went to PA recently to do the punch list, noticing some things that needed to be addressed.

First Responder Update
We are in the process of renewing our agency paperwork through VAEMS. We have created a new update for our OMD, informing him of the changes we have made to our First Responder program and training that we hope to accomplish. We have also gotten most of our mutual aid sheets signed by the 3 other rescue squads in Scott Co., VA. Our First Responder-711 has been restocked and cleaned and is ready for inspection. We need to get our OMD to sign off on us and get our inspection done. Hopefully, this will be accomplished in the next few weeks.
Any people out there who wish to join us should call the Department and leave a message: 276-995-2035 or email us at fbvfd@mounet.com . EMTs and First Responders will be welcome, if they live within our Fire District, and others will be considered. Drivers and EMT/FR's must get their EVOC training, or already be certified by another Department within Scott County. A background check through VSP will also be done.

Helicopter Crash
Remember in your prayers members of the Armed Forces who were in a helicopter crash in Virginia Beach. It is believed that a young man from our area was in that crash, but is safe and well. "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength and mount up with wings as eagles." Pray also for the Army families at Fort Hood, TX. , and all the service men and women in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray for our President, to make the right decisions, and to do the right thing. [Chaplain Jim]
Seasonal Flu and 'Swine' Flu
Seasonal Flu shots were available for all responders in Scott County on 10Nov09 between 1300-and-1800 hrs. Many responders [firefighters, EMTs, police, deputies, and medical workers] took advantage of this offer. The shots were available at the Scott Co Dept of Health building below the 911 center. The Swine, or H1N1, Flu shot/spray will be available for responders when a sufficient supply is obtained. Contact SCDH for more information.
All Firefighters should consider getting their flu shots, since they are often called upon to help the public in their moments of need.

Fire Standby
FBVFD Firefighters stood by the the Station during the children's night out on 31OCT09. Firefighters from the Department handed out candy to 58 children. Last year we had less than that, but in some previous years we have had over ninety come and visit us. We hope all the children stay safe, wear their seat belts in the car, plan for emergencies with their parents/guardians, and remember their promise as Cadet Firefighters to never play with matches or lighters.
EVOC Instructor
Fort Blackmore Fire Dept now has an EVOC Instructor. Plans are to have a state EVOC class at the department. Currently, the Firefighters would be certified "lifetime" through the VDFP EVOC class certification. Fort Firefighters also supplement their driving skills with the VFIS Emergency Vehicle Driver Training program. However, it has come to our attention that once again the Virginia Department of Fire Programs may not certify the EVDT program through VFIS Insurance, causing the Deparment to make sure all of their Firefighters were certified under the Virginia Department of Fire Programs Emergency Vehicle Operators Course.
Engine 701
Engine 701 is finally paid off, thanks to the efforts of Scott Co Board of Supervisors and the citizens of Scott County, VA. We no longer owe on any vehicles.
Firefighter I
Firefighter I candiates at Fort Blackmore Fire Dept receive their certifications through ProBoards and Virginia Department of Fire Programs. Congratulations to Assist. Ch. Jason Perry and 1st Capt. Eric Ross for sticking with the plan and seeing it out to the end. Jason had a particularly hard time trying to get his certifications back from Richmond, but finally got it. The Department thanks them for their time and effort in learning basic firefighting techniqes and applying them to the real world rural fire department.

A Personal Note
I would like to take this space to thank all those volunteers at Fort Blackmore Fire Department who took time out of their busy schedule to stand-by at the Station during May 10th's County-Wide Exercise. I was very proud of the way you all did that. It is unfortunate that word did not filter to the Exercise Coordinators that you were available for that Exercise. I would like to take the rest of this space to remind Scott County that there are Seven fire departments inside the county boundaries, and there are actually Four EMS Providers in our county, which includes Fort Blackmore VFD First Responders. We may be small, and we may be far out in the countryside, but our hearts are just as big, and we volunteer our time and talent just like everyone else...

Fort Blackmore VFD becomes an EMS Agency for BLS Non-Transport
FBVFD Became an EMS Agency today, 06-27-06. This had been in the works since 2000. We had purchased a Chevy Ambulance {707} and had it lettered and striped for service. Then another Ambulance became available. We purchased it and equipped it for service. We went through a lot of tape to get where we are today, but we think it was worth it. Our meeting with the Southwestern Virginia EMS Coordinator went smoothly: we were able to show that the vehicle was ready to roll and that our paperwork was ready. Our Rescue Sergeant did a top knotch job of getting things ready for inspection. We went ON LINE as a Non-Transport BLS Provider for Scott County, VA, at 1530 hrs. Congratulations to the Department for a job well done, and to our Rescue Sergeant, many thanks.
